Chaos in Pretoria CBD after a Taxi driver is shot dead
South Africa’s capital Pretoria is a no go area today following clashes between taxi drivers and foreign nationals after a taxi driver was killed on Tuesday. Although police have tried to stabilize the situation, taxi drivers have vowed to shut down the city until police minister Bheki Cele has addressed them.
It is alleged that the deceased taxi driver identified as Jabu Baloyi was shot in the head after he confronted an unidentified foreign national who was selling drugs.
According to TimesLIVE, taxi drivers in Pretoria have embarked on an operation to reduce drug dealings in the city and the taxi driver was shot dead after a misunderstanding with a drug dealer in the bid to ‘clean up the city’.
Police have however blamed the taxi drivers for taking the law into their own hands and they have assured the public that they will conduct a thorough investigation until the perpetrators are brought to book.
Twitter has been ablaze with users citing that the foreign nationals have pressed the wrong buttons because taxi drivers are never to be messed with.
Meanwhile, another episode of looting and burning down foreign owned shops was also witnessed in the Pretoria CBD. Police had to resort to using rubber bullets to curb the situation.
