SONA 2020: South Africa to introduce robotics and coding in elementary schools.
The President of South Africa presented his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) last night and he touched on various issues affecting South Africa.
Among the issues that Cyril Ramaphosa touched on was the issue of introducing coding and robotics in primary schools.
He said coding and robotics will be introduced at grades R to 3 in 200 schools in South Africa in 2020, with a plan to implement it fully by 2022.
Ramaphosa also said vocational specialization subjects have been introduced at 550 schools, and 67 schools are now piloting the occupational stream.
Still, on the issue of education, Ramaphosa said nine new technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college campuses will be built in Sterkspruit, Aliwal North, Graaff Reinet and Ngqungqushe in the Eastern Cape, and in Umzimkhulu, Greytown, Msinga, Nongoma, and Kwagqikazi in KwaZulu-Natal the next year.
Plans to establish a new University of Science and Innovation in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng were also confirmed.
